Green mobility on the rail

High-speed Trains

The Velaro high-speed train runs on the equivalent gasoline consumption of 0.33 liters per seat per 100 kilometers. This makes Velaro not only one of the world’s fastest high-speed trains in operational use, but also the most eco-friendly. Based on its improved aerodynamics alone, the new Velaro trains use ten percent less energy than the first generation.

Regional multiple-unit Trains

The Desiro ML EMU regional multiple-unit train uses the equivalent of only 0.2 liters of gasoline per person per 100 kilometers at 100 percent passenger load. The dieseldriven Desiro ML DMU, which meets Stage III b emissions regulations, is also characterized by its high efficiency and environmental compatibility. Its diesel-electric drive, in combination with active motor management and fast energy storage, reduces consumption by up to 40 percent compared to conventional diesel-powered vehicles.

Metro vehicles  

The components and materials of the Oslo Metro are 94.7 percent recyclable. And its consistent lightweight construction and regenerative braking system means it also uses 25 percent less energy than predecessor vehicles. This makes this metro not only very environmentally friendly, but the reduced weight also puts less of a load on the tracks, thus reducing operating and maintenance costs.

Trams and Light Rail

The Avenio is not only one of the most modern 100 percent low-floor Light Rail today, but it is also capable to set important environmental standards due to its unique vehicle concept with low wheel-rail-impact. The “silent” electric brakes don’t pollute air with brake abrasion, electromagnetic emissions are minimized. The traction system features a 98% efficiency. The recyclability rate can be over 95%. Furthermore Avenio cuts energy use by up to 30% with the help of an energy storage system. For the operators, Avenio ensures the high availability and lower maintenance expenses.

Siemens Airval and Cityval are the latest generation of the VAL, which was the world's first fully automated people mover, without any driver nor attendant on board the vehicle. Train control systems  

The Trainguard MT train control system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 10,000 tons annually on a typical metro line thanks to energy-optimized travel.
The automatic train control system also permits 50 percent more traffic on a given segment of track. It used to be that an average of 20 trains per hour could use a metro track, and now it is 30. Thanks to reduced headways and thus shorter waiting times, more travelers are changing from cars to public transit.

Passenger Coaches

The Viaggio sets new standards due to its simple maintenance, maximum availability and reliability. Modern technologies such as reduction of energy consumption, high-tensile light weight construction and optimized passenger capacity (“no transportation of empty seats)”. emphasize the cost efficiency of the Viaggio.

Mini-LEU for ETCS 

As basic elements of the ETCS European Train Control System, the LEUs (Lineside Electronic Units) transmit information from signals to rail vehicles. The Mini-LEU S11 is solar-powered and uses 90 percent less energy than conventional models. In addition, the need for extensive cabling is eliminated.

High-performance locomotives

Vectron, the modern locomotive generation for transporting freight and passengers, is particularly impressive in terms of environmental compatibility: it reduces pollution and noise and is built from 98 percent recyclable materials and components. And its regenerative braking system saves up to 25 percent more energy, depending on the line topology.

Optimizing operating energy  

With the CCU energy-saving method of our ATO (Automatic Train Operation) up to 30 percent of the requisite operating energy in mass transit and main-line railways can be saved. Using vehicle- and railway line-related data, the system calculates the most efficient “motion path” for energy-optimized operation. CCU (Cruising Coasting Unit) improves efficiency and punctuality, has a stabilizing effect on the overall schedule, and ensures wear-resistant and low-noise operation.

Simis LC grade-crossing protection system

With the Simis LC grade-crossing protection system, the idle times of road traffic are substantially shortened and thus fuel consumption and pollutant emissions reduced. Special software functions permit the “barriers lowered” time while the train is approaching the grade crossing to be optimized and cut by 20 seconds, corresponding to a reduction in the total “barriers lowered” time of 50% at a train speed of 120 km/h.
