Lane Lights

Lane Lights can be used to control traffic.

Lane lights are based on modern LED technology and are set into the roadway surface. Lane lights can be used either for dynamic lane assignment or static shoulder marking.

Actuation of Variable Message Signs

Modular variable message sign actuators can be used very flexibly.

They also ensure a high degree of availability of the triggered variable message signs (VMS) because, thanks to a patented surveillance system, the LEDs are even monitored when they are turned off. For the customer, this makes operation and maintenance more economical.

Flexible adjustment

The VMS actuator can be used with both halogen fiber optics and LED VMS. Due to the modular structure, with a controller module and up to eight lamp / LED control boards, precise adaptation to the customers' requirements is ensured.

Video Surveillance System

Video surveillance of selected routes is required for certain types of traffic control on freeways. For example, this always applies to tunnels, but also to the temporary approval of using the hard shoulder.


Independent studies confirm that enforcement contributes significantly to increasing road safety and helps to save lives. Consequently, surveillance systems are increasingly used in cities and on freeways. Systems offering a reliable technology and a good cost/benefit ratio are much sought after.

Increased Safety

This adjustment can be done automatically or manually, by reducing the maximum speed and alerting road users in dangerous situations, e.g. icy roads, poor visibility or traffic jams. This makes it possible to significantly increase safety and to ensure a smooth traffic flow.

Modern Technology

Variable message signs (VMS and SLS) use LEDs to display text information or traffic symbols. The LED elements are monitored by their controller to prevent disrupted, illegible, or contradictory displays.  An optional hardware lockout can also be installed.

Lane Control Signs on Freeways

Cyclic traffic flows and temporary capacity bottlenecks require flexible traffic control methods. Lane control signs can be used to generate temporary additional capacities into one direction or indicate a lane change, e.g. in the case of roadworks. The Siemens solutions guarantee the highest level of safety in this area. Lane control signs use LEDs to display lane signals with arrows. The display elements are monitored to prevent unsafe signaling states.  An optional hardware lockout can also be installed.

Variable Message Signs

Dynamic variable direction display by means of variable message signs is used to channel traffic away from overutilized routes to network parts that still have reserves.

Dynamic Information Boards

Programmable information displays are used to inform road users about existing situations, for example about the traffic situation, or to issue guidance regarding an existing diversion or optimum access to stadiums or trade fairs. These dynamic information boards are valuable additional, infrastructural facilities for traffic control.  Their collective character ensures that they reach all passing motorists.

Ramp Metering

The combination of highly frequented freeways and highly frequented freeway entrances is asking for traffic jams. This situation can be remedied by controlling the traffic flow in the freeway entrance. The system utilizes an intelligent control algorithm, which controls a traffic light system at the entrance that limits the number of vehicles entering to ensure optimum traffic flow on the main lane.

Temporary Release of Hard Shoulder

To absorb temporary capacity utilization peaks, the hard shoulder may be temporarily released for general use. This increases the short-term capacity and, as has been demonstrated, prevents traffic jams from occurring.
