Traffic detectors

The quality of almost all traffic systems depends on the detector, as the control systems can only work reliably if the traffic data provided is reliable. The more effective this information is, the better the centers are able to reduce traffic jams, travel times, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Varied technologies

The technologies for the Sitraffic product family are based on various technologies, from the classic induction loop to radar and video detectors as well as wireless magnet detectors.

Travel Time Measurement

Traffic management systems are mostly based on the data supplied by local detectors. Frequently, these site-based measuring values must then be processed further to provide road-specific information.  This is done using estimation procedures and models which in some cases do not sufficiently reflect reality.

Direct Data Collection

New approaches involve the direct collection of road-specific data such as travel time and speed. Traffic jams and disruptions can be derived from this data with much more accuracy.

Siemens offers two sustained, infrastructure-supported solutions: Sicore and Wimag. Two high-tech solutions, many advantages:

The Sicore Camera 

...  automatically recognizes any number plate and has undergone extensive field testing. Almost every vehicle is recognized, classified and then, at a second monitoring station, positively identified.

  • Reads hazardous goods plates

  • Anonymized personal data for optimal compliance with data privacy regulations

Sicore is suitable for measuring the travel time, also for long road sections with a high number of turn off and entry processes. The high recognition rate allows the travel times to be measured with a high accuracy.

The Wimag Detector

… a “wireless magnetic detector”. It stands for innovation with added value:

  • Low installation costs

  • Fast and simple installation in the road surface

  • Practical readings of only 7,5 x 7,5 x 5,0 cm

  • No supply cables necessary

  • Long life span of about ten years

Wimag measures the magnetic signatures which vary from vehicle to vehicle. The data obtained is transmitted by radio to a base station and evaluated there. Due to the achieved recognition rates, the detector can also be used for travel time measurement. This detector is suitable for sections with a length of one to three kilometers and for a small or medium number of turn off and entry processes on the road.

Collection of environmental data

Pollutant sensors with online link-up provide constantly updated load data (emissions) at selected sites in the urban road network.

Importance of the Measurements

These measured values serve as indicators of the general pollutant situation in the immediately surrounding area and, if for instance the predefined threshold values are exceeded, they can be used to trigger a range of traffic control measures as part of the overall strategic traffic management approach.

The weather has a significant impact on the traffic flow. This is why the recording of environmental and weather data may feature in a traffic management system.
