Representation of the Traffic Situation

The traffic situation describes the traffic condition in a defined road network and can be indicated by means of geographic locations in a map view. This is done through a colored indication of the traffic condition in level-of-service stages: for example green for free-flowing traffic, yellow for heavy traffic and red for traffic jams.

Additional Information

We go one step farther and make it possible to visualize traffic-related information such as weather, roadworks, road blockages or current traffic reports with detailed information on traffic obstructions.

The traffic situation is essentially based on :

  • selectively measured traffic data and

  • road-specific traffic data – in particular travel time measurements, because traffic jams and disruptions can be directly derived from this data.

The merging of data from local and mobile detection enables the quality of the traffic situation indication to be improved.

Traffic Situation as Information Basis

The indication of the traffic situation is a key element in the operation of a traffic control center. It provides important information for the functional modules of the connected control and information systems.  What's more, it offers road users information, via the Internet or mobile end devices, for choosing their route in terms of time, area and mode.

Traffic Report: Manual Update of Information

Not all traffic-related data can be collected automatically.

Updating Information

Additional traffic data is entered, processed and supplemented via the traffic newsroom workplace. It is, for example, possible to automatically combine traffic reports generated on the basis of detector data with additional data received from the police or cover planned incidents such as big events.  Roadworks management is another central topic. In this context it is possible to automatically transmit relevant, geographical location data from an authority's system to the traffic database.

Basis for Traffic Management

The data entered via the traffic newsroom workplace serves as the basis for the traffic management activities. They

  • affect higher-level strategies,

  • flow into diversion recommendations,

  • are used to estimate travel time estimations and

  • provide information to road users.


Control of Message Signs

In the city, dynamic message signs are used to inform road users about particular incidents such as traffic jams or roadworks, or to implement traffic control actions.

Control with Concert

These diverse, fully graphic and alphanumeric sign types can be connected to Concert and actuated from there. The supply and control of the message signs is implemented via the Concert sign control module.  This module allows the layout and the contents of the information displayed on the signs to be defined.  Correspondingly, the relevant information is switched either automatically, i.e. on the basis of a pre-defined action plan, or manually.

Strategy Managementf

In order to define, test and implement traffic strategies, Siemens developed a powerful tool.

It can be used for

  • applications such as traffic control, parking guidance and

  • higher- level traffic management.

Urban traffic data, data of city freeways, parking, environmental and weather data can be optionally combined in logical sequences.

From Input to Measure

These form the basis for strategic measures such as inner city traffic control, traffic control in the freeway network or traffic news. A completely new aspect – environmentally conscious traffic management – is now also fully supported by the strategy management tool.
As an additional service, the tool offers the possibility to coordinate between the various public bodies responsible for different traffic networks.  The advantage:  jointly developed and agreed strategies can be implemented in order to influence traffic in its entirety. In this process, framework conditions are stipulated for the connected subsystems, which are taken into consideration in their optimization processes.

City Freeways and Urban Expressways

City freeways and urban expressways are an an important part of the urban street network. They are becoming increasingly important in their function of dealing with the flow of traffic.

Solution: Sitraffic Conduct+

The core of this urban freeway solution consists of the Siemens SITAFFIC CONDUCT+ international freeway control center. It offers a whole range of measures for the urban freeway range, from classic traffic management on main routes with speed regulation and information transfer to traffic control at interchanges and ramp metering.

In addition, numerous external systems can be gradually integrated:

  • tunnel control

  • video surveillance

  • emergency call systems

  • tolling systems

  • travel weather information systems

Depending on requirements, these can be used individually or in various combinations.

Tunnel control

Tunnels represent critical bottlenecks of the traffic network. Traffic disruptions in tunnels have serious effects on the traffic flow and moreover pose a serious risk to road users. Therefore, there are particularly stringent requirements concerning the safety and operation in tunnels. Traffic disruptions in urban tunnels have particularly serious effects on the urban road network. It is thus of great importance that the tunnel control be integrated into global traffic management so as to take appropriate action on a large scale and as early as possible. This is now possible by integrating tunnel control in a comprehensive travel management system.
