Trends in Urban Traffic Technology

The manifold range of Sitraffic products is continuously developed further so that it corresponds to the latest state of the art. In doing so, Siemens promotes innovation and pioneering trends and develops novel solutions and technologies. It goes without saying that the new can be combined with what is there already.

Vehicle-to-X

Vehicle-to-X refers to an intelligent transport system where all vehicles and infrastructure systems are interconnected with each other. This connectivity will provide more precise knowledge of the traffic situation across the entire road network which in turn will help:

  • Optimize traffic flows

  • Reduce congestion

  • Cut accident numbers

  • Minimize emissions

Cooperative Systems Car to x

"The introduction and utilization of C2x systems (cooperative systems) improves road safety and traffic efficiency, essentially through solutions that are relying on the significantly better knowledge of the local and global traffic situation in the road network.“ (ITS Action Plan, European Commission)

Achieving a Vision

Car to x is a vision that is internationally aligned in traffic telematics and has already led to a multitude of projects, technological developments and standardization projects. C2x merges the link between the two essential traffic technology components: the vehicles and the infrastructure systems. This link is usually implemented through wireless communication and data exchange in the combinations.  A possible application with our system solutions is the transmission of signal states (remaining green or red times) directly into the vehicle.

Intermodal Traffic Management

To make optimum use of the capacities of the entire traffic infrastructure, in particular in fully utilized urban conurbations, the intermodal evaluation of the traffic system is increasingly gaining in importance.

Best-possible Use as Objective

Capacities, the current utilization of the traffic network, disturbances in private and public transportation form the information basis for intermodal traffic management. The intelligent control on the basis of this information then makes it possible to transport a maximum number of persons and goods make best possible use of the existing traffic infrastructure. This way, appreciable positive effects on profitability and environment can be achieved.

Environmentally-Conscious Traffic Management

Wind, weather and industrial emissions cannot be influenced by traffic control measures, of course.

Reduction of Pollutant Load

Efficient traffic management can significantly reduce the amount of pollutant emissions caused by trucks and passenger cars.  Whenever the total pollutant load rises notably and approaches the legal limits, the responsible authorities need to take immediate, efficient action, for instance by rerouting individual traffic flows or closing certain zones for certain types of vehicles.

Steering with Sitraffic

Effective air quality improvement is only possible if the current pollutant distribution and load – the total emission volume – is known.  As our new Sittraffic central platform incorporates the corresponding environmental models, remedial measures can be initiated exactly wherever and whenever they are required. Thus strategic traffic management enables the operator to choose the right intervention strategies for every situation, or leave traffic flowing freely under uncritical weather conditions, for instance.

Traffic Data Collection

New technologies and procedures allow road-specific data, in particular travel times, to be collected directly. Traffic jams and disturbances can frequently be derived from this data with much more accuracy than from data supplied by local detection.

Basically, two different types of process data are being used in this area:

  • Infrastructure-based data and

  • Floating Car Data (FCD)

These different approaches are currently in various stages of development and testing, and display specific properties, such as data contents, data volume, up-to-dateness of the data, cost, which all have to be weighed and taken into consideration in any decision regarding their use. The Sitraffic product family comprises two sustained and infrastructure-based procedures for travel time measurement:

In principle, we also allow data to be integrated from different data sources into the data pool of our centers, in order to make it available and utilize it for traffic management purposes and information systems or for offline applications such as planning and evaluation.

Data Fusion

Data from various different sources is frequently available to describe the traffic situation. This data differs in its contents, geographic level of detail, provision intervals and quality.

Merging Sources

By merging data from various different sources, it is possible to obtain improvements in terms of completeness, accuracy and up-to-dateness. This allows traffic control, routing and information to be optimized. The merging of data from various different sources requires a lot of experience in the handling of traffic data. It is absolutely essential to assess the reliability of the data sources and to consider the specific properties of the recording technologies. In this context, Siemens develops customized solutions within the scope of ongoing projects.

Management of Street Lighting

Rising energy costs are making precise supervision and control of street lighting more and more important.

At the same time, the safety and attractiveness of the roads and public squares need to be retained.

With VIA LUMEN, we offer you a possibility to monitor and control the street lighting and thus to implement an efficient lighting management system. Our traffic control platform Scala / Concert can provide valuable input in this connection.

Available information regarding, for example, the current traffic situation, events, traffic disruptions, roadworks, and weather are all fed into an interface in the lighting control center of VIA-LUMEN. This permits optimal management of street lighting based on cost and safety considerations.
