Siemens Mobility will deliver 10 more new Smartron locomotives to "BDZ - Passenger Services"
- "We are glad that we can again support the modernization of the rolling stock," said Eng. Kalin Ivanov, CEO of Siemens Mobility in Bulgaria.
- In addition, the two companies have signed contracts for the supply of spare parts and full maintenance support for the locomotives.
Siemens Mobility will deliver 10 more Smartron locomotives to "BDZ - Passenger Services". They will complement the 15 machines already in operation by the state-owned company.
The contract was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Transport and Communications in the presence of Minister Georgi Gvozdeykov. The total value of the locomotives is BGN 91.1 million without VAT, including maintenance, personnel training, and costs for emergency repairs.
The first 15 Smartron locomotives were purchased by BDZ in 2020. The last one of the ordered locomotives, which bear the names of Bulgarian rulers, was delivered in May 2021.
"We must do everything possible to catch up with the lag in rail transport and keep up with the times. I hope that in the near future we will reach the levels of developed countries in the world," said Minister Gvozdeykov, wishing for the safe use of the new locomotives.
"We are pleased that 18 years after the delivery of the first Desiro diesel multiple units for the needs of BDZ, we have the opportunity to support the national railway carrier in the modernization of the rolling stock. With their high-tech characteristics, proven profitability, and environmental friendliness, the Siemens Smartron locomotives have established themselves as a leading concept in Europe and will help ensure improved availability and comfort for passengers in our country," said Eng. Kalin Ivanov, CEO of Siemens Mobility in Bulgaria.
The ten new locomotives will be of the Smartron X4-E-Lok-D model. The first will be delivered in the next 18 months, and the rest will be delivered gradually by December 2025.
At the end of last week, Siemens Mobility signed two more contracts with BDZ-PS - for the supply of spare parts and for the provision of technical support for the first 15 Smartron locomotives. The total value of the contract is BGN 84.667 million for the next 9 years. The technical support includes planned and unplanned maintenance, regular inspections, replacement of monobloc wheels and brake discs, emergency repairs, and safety inspections.
"BDZ - Passenger Services" is the third Bulgarian company to purchase Smartron locomotives, following "PIMK Rail" EAD and "Bulmarket Rail Cargo" EOOD.
Smartron is a pre-configured locomotive that combines all the advantages of a standard product with the proven technology of the Vectron platform. It is designed for standard gauge of 1435 mm, weighs about 83 tons, and reaches a speed of up to 160 km/h. The locomotives of the series for Bulgaria are offered for operation in a railway network with variable current supply of 25 kV.
