First time Siemens Mobility brake control systems in SBB vehicles
Since the currently installed control unit was discontinued by the supplier, SBB published a tender in the summer of 2023 for the replacement of the electronic brake control system in the Re 460 locomotives and the IC2000 control car. The last of the Re 460 locomotives, built by a purely Swiss industrial community, were put into service between 1992 and 1996 and are expected to be in service at least until the mid-2040s.
A few weeks after the publication of the tender, a specialist from Siemens Bremse in Erlangen and Swiss Rolling Stock employees took advantage of the offered appointment and inspected the locomotive and the IC 2000 control car in Zurich.
SBB AG's specification was clear. The new brake control unit is to be implemented in the existing installation space, taking into account the specified mounting points and cable routing.
On October 12, 2023, the time had come and we handed over our offer to SBB AG. In spring 2024, Siemens Mobility received the order for the installation of the brake controls.
At the heart of the system is the BSG3 brake control unit, which has been manufactured at the Siemens plant in Nuremberg for over ten years and has been successfully used in various vehicle categories by Siemens Mobility.
The scope of delivery and services:
- Delivery of at least 240 brake control units,
- Creation of two software variants (one each for the locomotive and the control car),
- Component-level testing and proof of conformity
- Support and provision of documentation so that SBB can obtain further vehicle approval
We are pleased about the order for the replacement of the electronic brake control of the Re 460 locomotives and the IC 2000 control cars and thank you for the trust placed in us. Our brake calculator helps to ensure that the Re 460 locomotives and the IC 2000 control cars can remain in service until at least 2045. We are looking forward to a successful joint realization of the project and a good cooperation with SBB.
SMO has won the WTO tender for a new brake computer including software with a promising solution. I am convinced that the new product will serve the locomotive Re 460 and the IC 2000 control cars well until the end of service and will contribute to economical and punctual train traffic. I am looking forward to a partnership-based and success-oriented implementation of the project.
Series deliveries and subsequent fleet-wide conversion are expected to take place in 2027 and 2028.
