AutomatedTrain – the next step towards fully automated driving
With AutomatedTrain, Siemens Mobility and eight partners are developing the future of rail transportation. The aim is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of fully automated dispatching and stabling journeys, as well as the automated preparation and stabling of trains. The vehicle receives a drive command, gets ready independently and drives to the departure station fully automated.

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is supporting the project with approximately 42.6 million euros. Bringing together industry, rail transport companies, rail infrastructure operators and science, the project team around Siemens Mobility and Digitale Schiene Deutschland forms a unique consortium from various sectors.
AutomatedTrain – the path to fully automated driving
To demonstrate the technical feasibility of AutomatedTrain, a Mireo vehicle will be equipped with intelligent sensors for environmental perception, as well as innovative automation technology. In 2026, the vehicle will drive fully automatically from the stabling area to the first station at the Wegberg-Wildenrath Test and Validation Center. In addition, the obstacle detection system will be tested on a second train in the Stuttgart S-Bahn network in real operation in shadow mode.
AutomatedTrain: The project results are presented in the final video.
AutomatedTrain – the Technology

AutomatedTrain – the Use Cases

Stabling area
- Fully automated preparation of the vehicle.
- Vehicle performs self-check.
- Vehicle sends status to operation center (ready to go or not).

Driving the vehicle
- After getting the start command, the vehicle drives fully automated at a max. speed of 40km/h.
- Vehicle is using the Obstacle Detection System to observe its ego track during the drive, sensor data is recorded.
- In combination with the Digital Map and real-time localization, objects on the ego track are detected and a reaction is performed if necessary (e.g., horn, brake).

Stopping at a platform and returning to park position
- After receiving the start command from the operations-center, the vehicle returns fully automated to the stabling area.
- Fully automated parking of the vehicle.
- Transition between GoA2 and GoA4 operation.
