Rail service hub delivers maintenance intelligence for rolling stock
Benefit from rail service expertise and resources where they’re needed
Shifting passenger and freight traffic from road to rail is a good thing – but it also places growing demands on vehicle availability and network capacity. How can they be fulfilled – quickly and cost effectively? A digital approach is not a future dream, but a highly practical and promising reality, such as through maintenance intelligence based on real-time data analysis. Rail service hub brings the various elements together.
Bridging the gap: from challenge to solution
The rail industry is in need of ever greater efficiency, yet grapples with a daunting challenge: the use of multiple, unconnected systems operating simultaneously. This fragmentation is particularly problematic given the increasing complexity of rail systems. One example is when trains have to go to the workshop for maintenance, resulting in time and cost inefficiencies.
The answer lies in a paradigm shift – away from isolated, parallel tools for individual use cases – towards a unified digital solution. By leveraging Railigent X, our cloud-based suite of applications for the rail industry, we’re now able to make this solution a reality. Rail service hub takes advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to intelligently connect and analyze all available data from rail vehicles and workshops.
This enables the Rail service hub to provide fleet managers with information on real-time data, such as current operational status, GPS position and open work orders for each vehicle. It then balances these data against available maintenance capacities in connected workshops. The outcome is an optimized recommendation for maintenance scheduling, allowing vehicles to be directed to a suitable workshop, reducing empty runs and downtime.
This real-time, data-driven approach of maintenance planning leads to significant cost savings, too. The math is simple: reducing unnecessary downtime while ensuring vehicles are properly serviced helps maximize both vehicle availability and network capacity, and thus boost profitability.
Furthermore, the use of cloud technology adds scalability, accessibility and further cost-effectiveness. It's a groundbreaking step towards the overall digitalization of rail operations, making the maintenance process more sustainable, profitable and efficient.
Maintenance planner benefits in brief
Adopting the Rail service hub offers numerous advantages:

Optimized planning and execution of maintenance schedules, resulting in significant savings in terms of time and money

Enhanced availability and reliability of locomotives due to efficient scheduling of maintenance measures, which reduces downtime

Increased profitability potential due to maximized operational efficiency and minimized downtime
Rail service hub building blocks: diving deeper
This operational efficiency and profitability is made possible by the integration and analysis of data from three main sources, made available via APIs:
- The integration of Train Data and Event Service provides real-time updates on GPS position, status and error messages from vehicle diagnostics. This enables fleet managers to quickly address emerging issues, prevent potential breakdowns, reduce unexpected delays and contribute to smoother operations, thereby improving efficiency and reducing costs.
- The integration with Siemens Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) supplies essential maintenance data and enables the readout or transmission of operating data (e.g. work orders, mileage or operating hours) to other systems (e.g. CORMAP).
- Finally, the Rail service hub integrates with HAFAS, a scheduling system that provides information on the vehicles’ planned routes and timetables. This allows fleet managers to think ahead and plan maintenance during natural downtimes or at a convenient workshop along a future route. This level of planning helps minimize disruption to operations and maximize the usage of maintenance facilities.
By combining these three data sources via Rail service hub, rail operators can benefit from proactive, efficient and cost-effective maintenance intelligence.
Pioneering a new era for efficient and cost-optimized planning
As a digital solution based on Railigent X, Rail service hub helps manage the planning and implementation processes of maintenance measures. In this way, it contributes to successfully connect the real and digital worlds, and, ultimately, to ensure a sustainable future for the rail industry.
