Yard Management System (YMS)
For more efficiency and safety in your maintenance centers and depots. With our Yard Management System, you can maintain your wagons, locomotives and multiple units efficiently and on time – and meet high safety requirements at the same time.
Greater efficiency and safety in maintenance centers and depots
The Yard Management System (YMS) – also known as the BFR operations management computer – is a solution for controlling, monitoring and optimizing the entire maintenance process in maintenance centers and depots. The system maps the entire process chain from entry to exit of the plant – transparently, comprehensibly and in real time. Whether scheduled deadline work, repairs, wheelset diagnostics, interior and exterior cleaning, catering or water supply: the YMS always keeps everyone involved informed about the current operating status – and thus ensures that everything runs smoothly and safely.
The main advantages for you:
- Optimization of the entire maintenance process
- Increased reliability and operational safety
- Increased availability (preventive maintenance and on-site service)
- Standard reports and evaluations
- Reduced implementation times (standardization)
- Official approval by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA)
The main functions:

Maintenance center overviews of multiple units and cars
The maintenance center overviews provide an overall view of the center, indicating the locations of vehicles, their status and degree of completion, and track occupancy.

Indoor track with visualization and operation
Either an overview of all tracks in the depot or a single depot track can be displayed. In addition to the track occupancy, all relevant information is displayed, e.g. the status of the hall doors, traffic lights, the warning system, the working platforms and the track switches for activating or deactivating the power supply to the overhead line.

Operating data and communication acquisition
Using the operating data acquisition function, staff log-ons are integrated into the safety chain for shed entries and exits. At all times, there is an up-to-date overview of all staff who are logged on for work on the trains and the track. Communication between the people involved in the process (signalmen in the interlocking, operations coordinators, etc.) is tool-based and is verifiably documented. In particular, this involves train handovers, “train ready” messages, and route calls.
Due to the central function of the YMS within a maintenance center, extremely high demands can be placed on availability and reliability. For this reason, a distributed system that is scalable according to the respective requirements is used.
The main computers form the basis for monitoring and controlling the maintenance equipment. The database computers administer the master data and the message archive, whereas dedicated workstation computers implement communications to third-party systems. Depending on the availability requirements, all these components can be designed as hot-standby, redundant components.
Interfaces to operator- or center-specific production systems (e.g. SAP) enable data to be exchanged for operations management in the maintenance process. Trains and vehicles are tracked within the maintenance center via standardized links to train tracking systems in the interlocking and / or appropriate identification systems.
Efficient depot management through cross-system integration
The integration of the YMS and Trackguard Cargo MSR32 RaStw creates a holistic operations management system that covers both the dispatching and the signaling control of a railroad depot. All operationally relevant information is provided centrally and displayed clearly on a standardized interface. This minimizes the coordination effort, avoids loss of information and sustainably increases the efficiency of depot management.
