Signaling X: Proof of Next‑Generation Signaling for Cities
Debuting in mass transit at the Singapore Rail Test Center Signaling X introduces a future-proof, cloud-ready signaling platform for urban mobility, demonstrated in live Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) operation.
Mission: Cloud-Ready Signaling for Modern Challenges
The project set out to prove a signaling approach that boosts metro capacity and reliability while providing energy savings as well as guaranteeing safety and security. Â
Smooth and streamlined migration, preserved safety
To enable Signaling X for Singapore, safety relevant (SIL4) CBTC and interlocking applications with well-proven and mature functionalities were seamlessly migrated from the existing system onto the digital Distributed Smart Safe System (DS3) platform running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers while the signaling logic remained unchanged. It showed that a smooth switchover between a conventional system and the next generation of CBTC with Signaling X is quick and easy while ensuring compatibility and operational excellence.
In Singapore we demonstrate how Signaling X combines operational continuity with innovation, offering a future-proof system with advanced functionalities and benefits, such as full hardware independence, enabling an increase of the operator's operational efficiency by up to 20%. By decoupling hardware and software allows updates to be applied without modifying the safety application or invalidating the safety case. This feature enables remote software patches during operation to minimize downtime and ensure highest security with up to 100% uptime. Overall, the demonstration in Singapore confirmed that Signaling X delivers enhanced flexibility, scalability, and maintainability for operators to address current and future operational as well as global challenges.
The future is now
The groundbreaking live demonstration in November 2025 presented train operations, fully controlled by SIL4 CBTC signaling logic, running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. The event highlighted the system's unmatched availability and advanced security concept, ensuring increased operational efficiency. It also showed how existing investments were safeguarded by preserving the untouched signaling logic, while introducing the next generation of CBTC technology. This achievement exemplifies the seamless integration of innovation and operational excellence with future-proof solutions.
