Metro Sydney

Transform mobility in Western Sydney

Delivering a turnkey metro system for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project

Safe and reliable transport to the new Western Sydney Airport

Sydney Metro is revolutionising how Australia’s biggest city travels, with a new metro service that will connect travellers, tourists and commuters with the new Western Sydney International Airport and the expanding region. The city-shaping rail link, from St Marys through to the new airport and Bradfield, will provide a major economic stimulus for Western Sydney. It's the first rail project in the history of Australia which has committed to being certified carbon neutral from the start of construction work through to operations.

A city-shaping rail link

Siemens Mobility is providing the turnkey system as a member of the Parklife Metro Consortorium, which brings together Plenary Group, Webuild, Siemens and RATP Dev to deliever the Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations8 and Maintenance (SSTOM) package for Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport.

Siemens Mobility will supply 12 fully automated, driverless metro trains with three cars each. The 23 kilometre new railway including 6 new stations between St Marys, the new Western Sydney International Airport and Bradfield will become the transport spine for the region. The project is a significant milestone, being the first turnkey rail project and the first public-private partnership for Siemens Mobility in Australia. As well as fully automated driverless metro trains, the scope of supply covers the full range of services from project management and to the digital rail infrastructure including system integration, signalling, electrification, telecommunications, automated platform screen doors, cybersecurity and commissioning. We will be providing maintenance for the trains for 15 years. The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport service is expected to be operational when the airport opens for passenger services.

Maximum system availability with Railigent X

Railigent X is an open application suite for railroad asset management. Using Railigent X in Australia for the first time will reduce standstill times and achieve up to 100% system availability through predictive maintenance. Siemens Mobility is also offering decision-making aids for the updated asset maintenance plan through monthly reporting based on intelligent data use.

Sustainable strategies and economic growth

Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport project is the first rail infrastructure project in Australia to commit to being certified carbon neutral from the start of construction, through to operations. All carbon emissions generated during construction and operation will be reduced and offset.

Rail services

Siemens Mobility Rail Services in particular supports with condition-based maintenance enabled for this full service contract by Railigent X, our suite of applications, for 15 years covering all rail system assets. The project will be the first rail project in Australia to be carbon-neutral and includes the following services: digital asset management for rail systems, vehicle equipment measurement systems, cybersecruity services, spare part handling and obsolescence management. Railigent X reduces downtimes by using predictive maintennace to enable up to 100% system availability. Siemens Mobility also offers decision support for the updated asset maintenance plan by a monthly reporting based on intelligent use of data.

Railigent X by Siemens Mobility

Railigent X

Railigent X makes intelligent use of rail asset data to create added value by acquiring deeper insights into asset performance. The intelligent use of rail asset data improves the asset management for the driverless metro vehicles, signalling, rail electrification, communication equipment, platform screen doors as well as depot and workshop equipment. Analysingrail asset data provided by Railigent X applications leads to improved operation, optimised maintenance, higher cost-efficiency, and up to 100% availability of rolling stock and wayside assets.

Digital asset management for rail services

Digital asset management for rail system

Maximize the value from your rail assets over their entire lifecycle: We’re offering intelligent support for improved decision-making. With our data-driven asset performance management and asset investment planning tools, you can optimize your rail systems’ lifecycle costs and renewal strategies and maximize their availability and operational efficiency.

Cybersecruity services

Efficient cybersecurity monitoring and seamless security updates

Siemens Mobility provide proactive cybersecurity monitoring that tracks the current security status of assets, software versions, vulnerabilities, and patches. Our services also include rail system lifecycle information. By ensuring timely implementation of security updates and patches, potential vulnerabilities can be closed. This ensures robust and effective protection.

Maintenance service

Full-service maintenance

Whether it’s to ensure continuous operation, maximum availability and reliability, or value preservation: covered by a 15-year full-service contract for all rail system assets including overhaul and spare parts handling, the project for Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport benefits from our state-of-the-art maintenance services helping keep trains and rail systems running. In addition to condition-based services this also includes predictive maintenance by making intelligent use of diagnostic and operational data based on Railigent X. Thus, digitalization contributes to a new dimension in maintenance performance.

Signaling and communication

CBTC Signaling and communication

Smart cities solve urban problems with technology. With smart infrastructure and driverless operation, we are enabling travelers in Sydney to enjoy first-class mobility with maximum reliability and efficiency. In this way, we are supporting the sustainable development of urban habitats.

Rail electrification

Rail electrification

Our electrification solutions, including Australia's first Sitras SFC, provide reliable power for stations. The first-ever use of an inverter in a metro ensures maximum efficiency and the optimum medium-voltage. Our design optimizes spans, OCS and RAMS, which increases the reliability and longevity of the rail system. In addition, our design enables operator-friendly monitoring and control of the railroad electrification system.

System Integration

System Integration

Integration of a fully automated driverless metro system with the Civil Works scope through the implementation of a 4D BIM model as part of the Digital Engineering scope. Full-Lifecycle approach to Systems Integration as part of a PPP delivery to optimize the Operation and Maintenance of the system.
