Main Hoon Mumbai (I am Mumbai)
Transforming Mobility for the city of Mumbai – Main hoon Mumbai (I am Mumbai)
I am Mumbai, the city of dreams, the metropolis with millions of aspirations, the inspiration for artists, the melting pot of communities, the milieu of entrepreneurs and the beehive of business. With a common thread running through the fabric of the city – the suburban railway services. Mumbai is India’s financial capital and commercial epicentre. Carrying almost three billion passengers annually, Mumbai’s suburban railway network is considered to be the lifeline of the city. Moving over 8 million passengers daily, the Mumbai suburban railway is arguably the busiest commuter network in the world. More than 3,000 trains ply on the 400+ km network across the length and breadth of the metropolitan region.
However, with growing demand in mobility, there was an urgent need to increase line capacity and improve punctuality of trains. Therefore, Indian Railways embarked on an ambitious journey to delineate long-distance services from local suburban services on Western Railways' 123-Km Mumbai Suburban section (extending from Churchgate station to Dahanu Road). Siemens played a significant role in upgrading the signalling infrastructure with state-of-the-art electronic interlocking solution for the 6th line addition between Bandra to Borivali section. This initiative will ensure dedicated four lines exclusively for suburban services, whilst delineating two dedicated lines for long-distance train services; a significant positive benefit for local commuters.
Increase capacity, safety and reliability with intelligent infrastructure has been one of the key objectives for Western Railways. One of the significant initiatives in this regard has been this project to lay separate lines to enable the movement of long-distance trains that connect the city to the rest of the country. On the Mumbai Suburban section of Western Railway, the fifth line was laid years ago to cover a major part of the 30-km stretch between Mumbai Central and Borivili station. However, as a bi-directional track the line had limited efficacy in allowing smooth movement of long-distance and freight trains originating and terminating at key nodes, such as Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus.
To completely delineate the long-distance services, the Railways has now laid the sixth line in phases from Mumbai Central to Borivili. This initiative will ensure dedicated four lines exclusively for suburban services, which will increase capacity and improve punctuality of suburban trains.
Reliable partnership
Keeping with our commitment to nation-building and contributing to the vision of developing a world-class suburban railways infrastructure for Mumbai, Siemens is a partner in progress with the Railways.
Our customer shares some insights into this fruitful partnership in the video alongside.
Bringing our expertise of decades and state-of-art technologies to the fore, Siemens is playing a key role in the modernisation of Mumbai’s suburban railway. From collaborating for commissioning of the sixth line, to supplying the propulsion equipment for suburban trains, Siemens’ globally-acclaimed technology is powering Mumbai’s mobility aspirations.
Signaling Components behind this project

Trackguard Westrace Mk II
Trackguard Westrace Mk II is a highly flexible, microprocessor-based interlocking system suitable for urban and mainline applications. With its straightforward configuration using ladder logic to deliver almost any vital functionality, the system provides real benefits to railway authorities in terms of cost of ownership, capability and flexibility. In addition, Trackguard Westrace Mk II offers high maintainability and availability proven by installations worldwide.

Route Relay interlocking
Siemens Route Relay is failsafe, non-fault-prone interlocking system. It is a vital component used in railway signaling circuits. The K 50 signal relay is legendary: It was the basis for relay interlockings, which marked the first step taken towards automating rail traffic before the computer age. In fact, relay expertise continues to be relevant for Siemens today since 50 percent of the relay interlockings are still in use in the world and actively being implemented in India along with Electronic Interlocking (Siemens WESTRACE MK II).

Axle Counters – Track Vacancy Detection: Overview
The reliability of an Axle Counter System is imperative in order to keep the network running safely and efficiently. An Axle Counter System determines the track vacancy; it supplies the information about whether a track in a particular section is clear or occupied, thereby permitting safe, trouble-free and efficient operations management of trains. Track vacancy detection is indispensable for safe rail operations and is a deciding contributor to trouble-free rail operations.

Audio Frequency track circuit (AFTC)
Siemens remote-fed, audio-frequency track circuits are used for accurate free/occupied status indications of the track section. Widely installed, this technology is recognized as reliable and robust by more than 170 customers. It can be installed in operation with all types of electrification systems and all railway applications (e.g. mainline, metro, rapid transit). Audio Frequency Track Circuit is designed as a track vacancy detection system for main line as well as metro, urban, and suburban railways. The isolation between two tracks is achieved by means of electrical separation joints.
