On April 16, 1853, India’s first passenger train set off from Mumbai’s Bori Bunder Station to Thane, with three steam locomotives hauling the 14 cars with 400 passengers. Ever since, the operations have grown from strength to strength, with the Railways serving as the backbone in India’s journey in becoming a global superpower. Currently, Indian Railways runs more than 10,000+ passenger trains every day, while transporting over one billion metric tons of freight across the country annually. On April 16, 2023, the country is celebrating 170 years of Indian Railways – the fourth largest railway network in the world that has emerged as India’s engine of socio-economic growth and a key contributor in nation building.
Even as India was flagging off its first passenger train with a 21-gun salute, another historic moment in railway mobility was being witnessed in Germany around the same time. In its early years of operation, engineering and technology pioneer Siemens presented the world’s first electric train on May 31, 1879. With many firsts to its credit spanning across three centuries – from electrifying Europe’s northernmost railway and setting a world record for high-speed transportation, to spearheading the digitalization of railways and actively shaping the future of mass mobility, Siemens has been a leader for seamless, sustainable, reliable, and secure transport solutions for more than 160 years.
