We transform mobility in Kashmir

Rail electrification technologies for a 42-km stretch on Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project

Electrifying the mountainous railway line in record time

Kashmir, the paradise on earth, is home to nearly 7 million people, with majority dependent on tourism, horticulture, and agriculture. Beyond its breathtaking beauty, seamless connectivity is vital for the region’s growth. The valley’s renaissance is unfolding through major infrastructure projects, with the USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) at its core—bridging Kashmir with industrial hubs, uniting communities, and driving economic progress. Cutting through tunnels, spanning bridges, and conquering extreme terrains, this railway network is more than transport; it is a lifeline of opportunity, transforming mobility and fueling Kashmir’s bright future. Here’s how Siemens supported Indian Railways.

Excellence in Execution

Electrifying a railway through Kashmir’s mountainous Pir Panjal range necessitated a partner with strong technology capabilities and expertise in pioneering solutions. Siemens is proud to have been a partner in progress for this project.

Indian Railways and IRCON bestowed the responsibility of electrifying one of the most challenging 42-km section of the USBRL project from Dharam to Banihal to Siemens. This section included a 12.8-km tunnel – the longest railway tunnel in the country.

Every bridge, every tunnel, and every stretch of the track had to be powered with precision, ensuring resilience against nature’s harshest elements.

A project of many firsts:

The project witnessed the commissioning of India’s first Rigid Overhead Catenary System (ROCS) on open terrain and bridges.

While ROCS has been built to endure extreme cold, enabling speeds up to 120 kmph, Siemens’ smart monitoring and simulation ensure reliability in the harshest conditions. The engineering marvel showcases how Siemens’ electrification technologies ensure safer, more efficient and sustainable railway operations in one of the most challenging landscapes.

The challenging project was completed in a record time of just 16 months – An engineering feat.

Reliable partnership:

ROCS is gaining momentum as go-to technology for mainline railways, when it comes to electrification in tough terrains. After USBRL, Siemens is now electrifying the Sivok Rangpo tunnel project at the foothills of the Himalayas in Sikkim. The state-of-art electrification technology is the ideal solution for similar challenging terrains across the country. Our customer shares some insights into this fruitful partnership in this video.

At the heart of this groundbreaking project was a team of dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to turn vision into reality. It was the commitment, expertise and passion of the people on the ground that ensured the seamless delivery and excellent execution of Project USBRL.

Beyond being an engineering marvel, the USBRL project is set to transform Kashmir’s fortunes by boosting trade and tourism, cutting carbon emissions, creating jobs, improving access to essentials and strengthening disaster response.

With this railway, Kashmir is not just connected, it has been empowered like never before. We at Siemens remain committed to providing world-class rail technologies to transform mobility in India—laying the tracks to a better future, today.
