Technology Day 2026: From Inspiration to Action – Solving the Rail Crisis Today

Oslo, Norway - August 26, 2026

With record-breaking attendance and a clear message to the industry, Siemens Mobility’s Technology Day 2026 set a new agenda for the Norwegian railway. Over 200 decision-makers, operators, and politicians gathered at Construction City to explore how AI, automation, and the "digital brain" can solve the capacity crisis today - without waiting decades for new infrastructure.

The atmosphere in Construction City was electric as the industry gathered for its largest meeting place of the year. The message from the stage was clear: Norway has already invested billions in digital infrastructure like ERTMS, but the full potential remains untapped. By shifting focus from "concrete to code," the industry can increase capacity by up to 30% on existing tracks.

A Human Approach to Technology

Birger Steffensen, CEO of Siemens Mobility Norway, opened the day not with technical specifications, but with a powerful human story. He described a 13-year-old girl fainting on a crowded commuter train - not due to a technical failure, but simply because there were too many people in too little space.

This is no longer 'breaking news'; it is the daily reality for thousands of passengers, Steffensen stated. He challenged the notion that a new 70-billion NOK tunnel, planned for 2052, is the only solution.

We have bought an iPhone but are only using it to make calls. We have built a four-lane digital highway but are only using two lanes. The 'brain' - the AI and automation that connects everything - is what’s missing.

Insights from the Ministry and Global Experts

The strategic importance of the event was underscored by State Secretary Cecilie Kroglund from the Ministry of Transport. She highlighted the government’s expectations for a more robust and efficient railway and expressed strong interest in how technology can accelerate the transition to predictive maintenance and smarter operations.

The audience received a global perspective from Dr. Claus Bahlmann, Siemens Mobility’s Global Head of AI, who demonstrated how artificial intelligence is transforming the industry from reactive to proactive operations.

This was followed by a deep dive into the S-Bahn Hamburg project, a real-world example of how Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is already delivering significant results. The presentation showed how Hamburg is increasing capacity by up to 30% on existing infrastructure - providing a highly relevant model for the challenges facing the Norwegian rail network today.

Chasing Seconds Together

The importance of continuous improvement was highlighted by Sporveien and Bane NOR, who shared their experiences from "the hunt for seconds" on the metro and mainline railway. The day concluded with a high-level panel discussion featuring leaders from Vy, Bane NOR, Sporveien, and the Railway Directorate. The consensus was clear: to ensure a reliable experience for passengers, the industry must break down silos and collaborate more effectively through digitalization and shared data.

Beyond the stage presentations, the event featured interactive technology stations where participants could take a deep dive into specific solutions. Experts were on hand to demonstrate how Train Planning Systems can optimize traffic flow, how Predictive Maintenance prevents downtime, and how advanced simulation software optimizes traction power supply and electrification projects for better performance and cost-efficiency.

Looking Ahead

Technology Day 2026 confirmed a strong collective will to accelerate the digitalization of the Norwegian railway. The insights and partnerships generated during the day will serve as a foundation for continued dialogue between authorities, operators, and technology providers.

Siemens Mobility remains committed to being a driving force in this journey, turning inspiration into real-world solutions for a more sustainable and efficient transport system.
