MTA Metro-North orders six additional locomotives from Siemens Mobility for Connecticut Department of Transportation
- Builds on initial order of 27 Dual Mode locomotives received in 2020
- Sustainable locomotives to be delivered through 2027
- Built to current EPA Tier IV standards for operation in the Park Avenue Tunnel and on 3rd rail territory across the state of New York
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Metro-North Railroad (MNR), a leading suburban commuter rail service provider in the New-York Connecticut area, is strengthening its fleet with six additional Dual Mode locomotives from Siemens Mobility. This order builds upon the initial purchase of 27 Siemens Mobility Dual Mode locomotives in 2020.
“With our Siemens Mobility North American headquarters in the heart of New York City, we’re excited that these sustainable locomotives will transport millions of passengers a year, including our own employees,” stated Michael Cahill, President of Rolling Stock, Siemens Mobility North America. “This order continues to build on our relationship with the MTA, which includes not only delivering sustainable locomotives, but also world class signaling and rail automation technologies.”
The new Dual Mode locomotives, to be delivered progressively through 2027, are set to replace MNR's GE P32AC-DM locomotives, which have either reached or exceeded their projected 25-year lifespan. The contract awarded to Siemens Mobility encompasses a total of up to 171 Dual Mode locomotives including all potential options.
Siemens Mobility's Dual Mode locomotives offer significant advancements over their predecessors, providing a lighter, more efficient, and eco-friendly solution. These locomotives are capable of operating in both electric and diesel modes, boasting unparalleled power and speed.
With 4,200 diesel-mode horsepower and a maximum speed of 110 miles per hour (diesel) or 80 miles per hour (electric), these locomotives will not only result in shorter travel times for passengers but also quicker recovery from service disruptions. Additionally, their adoption will substantially reduce CO2, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxide emissions, contributing to the MTA and MNR's sustainability efforts.
Designed for seamless integration throughout MNR’s rail operations, including potential future service expansion of the Empire Service Corridor, these Dual Mode locomotives will offer modern and reliable transportation options for thousands of passengers.
Siemens Mobility's Dual Mode locomotives are proudly manufactured in Sacramento, CA. This plant stands as one of the largest and most sustainable facilities of its kind in the U.S., harnessing the power of the California sun through its 2.1 MWp solar panel installation. It is part of Siemens Mobility’s larger U.S. manufacturing network of eight facilities, more than 4,000 employees and 2,000 suppliers, 140 of which are located in the New York and New Jersey region.
