#MovingEgypt

Egypt builds a new 2000 kilometer long high-speed, electrified mainline and freight rail network from scratch. This will create the world’s 6th largest high-speed rail system.
Connecting the entire country – Egypt’s high-speed rail network

Overview

With the median population in its mid-twenties, Egypt is actively looking for opportunities to support its growing nation and to become one of the world’s top 30 economies. To achieve this goal, Egypt is investing in a high-speed, electrified mainline and freight rail network. Why? To transform everyday lives through state-of-the-art transport.

Safely connecting people and goods across Egypt

To keep Egypt moving, the new reliable and sustainable rail system will provide efficient and safe transportation for people and goods. The 2,000 km long, state-of-the-art rail network, which will connect the country’s economic and development hotspots, will consist of three lines:

The first part of the major network will be 660 km of track connecting the port cities of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean. This section will offer an attractive, electrified commuter system for Greater Cairo.

The second line will be about 1,100 km long and run between Greater Cairo and Abu Simbel near the Sudan border, supporting urban development to the south.

The third line will cover 225 km, connecting the archeological World Heritage sites in Luxor with Hurghada and Safaga harbor by the Red Sea and easing freight transport to Egypt’s inland.

The new network will:

  • Enable millions of journeys a year
  • Save passengers up to 50 percent on travel time
  • Cut carbon and reduce air emissions by more than 70 percent compared to car or bus traffic
  • Ensure faster delivery of goods by creating a rail link from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, a Suez Canal on tracks that will extend through the entire country
  • Positively impact the economy and increase the quality of life for people in Egypt
