Whitepaper: Reducing the electrical clearances from overhead contact lines to structures
How to avoid costly modifications by limiting surge voltages
Most rail lines in the industrial nations of Europe were built in the early twentieth century and have been trafficked by diesel locomotives from the very start. Their many bridges and underpasses present serious challenges for electrification. Most are too low to maintain the minimum electrical clearance.
To ensure safety, adherence to electrical clearances from grounded components - such as bridges, overpasses, tunnels, and vehicles - is crucial, as specified by EN 50119. We have addressed the risk of flashovers caused by overvoltages by developing a surge arrester device specifically for 15- and 25-kV overhead contact line systems. This device effectively reduces surge voltages at the structure, allowing for smaller permissible distances.
In our white paper, we provide a detailed insight into the implementation of the product and offer practical examples of its application.
