On behalf of the former Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing, a concept for innovative transshipment facilities to increase the efficiency of combined transport has been developed since the early 1990s. The central component of this concept is rapid transshipment facilities with a hub function, in which rail-road transshipment takes place during the day and rail-rail transshipment during the night. The most important innovations of the MegaHub Lehrte for the hub function are presented below.
