More comfort than ever before
Comfort redefined – the next generation of the ÖBB Railjet based on the Viaggio Next Level brings numerous high-tech features that elevate rail travel to a whole new level. The innovative construction ensures lighter vehicles and greater energy efficiency. Following on from the initial order, ÖBB has already ordered 19 additional Railjet trains.

Comfortable travel at up to 230 km/h
The new ÖBB Railjets are now even more focused on the needs of passengers and ensure comfortable rail travel for all travelers. Each side of the train has three high-floor entrances and seven low-floor entrances that enable easy, barrier-free access for travelers with strollers, bicycles, or wheelchairs. Each train also provides six bicycle spaces and three wheelchair spaces. All trains offer open-plan and compartment cars as well as an on-board restaurant. The ambient lighting guarantees a consistently comfortable atmosphere by automatically adapting to the time of day.
Radio-permeable windowpanes ensure better mobile reception.
Travelers should be able to spend their time on board as they prefer. To enable passengers to use their mobile devices as usual, for example for work or streaming, the new ÖBB Railjets are fitted with radio-permeable windowpanes that ensure stable signal reception. The patented windows have a hardly visible, laser-applied special structure that guarantees a clear view but simultaneously offers 50 times better cellphone reception. Tests with an ÖBB Railjet already in service have shown that the available time of good 4G reception is increased by one third.
Railway operator benefits from a range of new high-tech features
The bogies of the second generation ÖBB Railjets are 30% lighter than the ones of the first generation. This was realized using a new construction principle and steel with a higher tensile strength. This means not only lighter weight, but also lower energy consumption in service. The innovative power distribution systems with redundant supply from the neighboring car also make an important contribution to energy-efficiency. All this leads to lower costs for the operator.
Another innovation is the self-diagnosis system with a secure radio link to the nearest maintenance depot. This enables quicker identification and reporting of problems and remediation in a short space of time. It ensures the availability of the trains and guarantees reliable operations.
