The Elizabeth line: Transforming everyday journeys for passengers
Powered by Siemens Mobility’s digital technology
Connecting the capital in a whole new way
The Elizabeth line has been a game-changer for London's transport network and Siemens Mobility has played a key role in this success, providing advanced technologies such as it's state-of-the-art signalling and other key passenger wayfinding systems to make the project a reality.
The line has enabled faster, more reliable journeys for passengers across the capital, reducing journey times and providing better connections into a more integrated transport network.
Delivering in Britain, for Britain
The Elizabeth line is transforming the everyday journeys of passengers across London and the South East, and with Siemens Mobility's technology at its heart there has been key investment with highly-skilled jobs across the UK.
Utilising the skills and people at our sites in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire and Chippenham, Wiltshire and leveraged the expertise within the global Siemens Mobility business to deliver digital technology that revolutionises the way rail lines in London are run.
Our involvement
Signalling
The Communications-based train control (CBTC) system for the key central section of the Elizabeth line has been designed by Siemens Mobility having been extensively tested in Braunschweig, Germany and safely tested at it's UK sites.
CBTC delivers high-frequency and automated train operation through the core tunnels, whilst linking seamlessly with the main line railway signalling systems to the east and west of the central section - there are three different signalling systems that Elizabeth line trains need to run on!
Station and railway systems
In order to have the platform screen doors (PSD) synchronised with the train doors it runs through Siemens Mobility's Trainguard MT On Board Control Unit (OBCU) which has to transmit to the wayside signalling system and on to the correct station PSD controller which instructs the PSDs to open.
With over 30,000 connections from signalling, CCTV, public address and station information systems - all speaking intricate computer languages - our extensive system integration test facilities in Ashby and Chippenham proved crucial to the smooth running of the railway from day-one.
The Elizabeth line's Romford control centre is where we control our Digital Station Manager (DSM) which helps keep where the technology, which was created at the company's Ashby Customer Information Systems technology centre, is operated.
Rob Morris, Managing Director for Rail Infrastructure UKI says:
"Hundreds of our people at Siemens Mobility’s Chippenham and Ashby engineering and manufacturing facilities, as well as colleagues in Germany and global R&D centres, have been crucial to bringing the Elizabeth line into service.
Working to integrate so many different systems from different suppliers has needed a truly collaborative approach."
