In international service: the Velaro family

High Speed Trainset Velaro E - AVE S103 - for Spanish National Railways RENFE

In July 2001, RENFE placed an order with Siemens to deliver 16 high speed trains for the Madrid-Barcelona-French border line. Then, in December 2005, another 10 trains were ordered. This fleet will reduce the travel time for the distance of 625 km from Barcelona via Zaragoza to Madrid to less than 21/2 hours.

The trainset develops 8,800 kW of traction power for a maximum operating speed of 350 km/h. It offers the highest degree of comfort and, with its four onboard galleys, high-quality catering for 405 passengers in three classes. Comfort and safety are guaranteed by the proven running gear technology from Siemens, while entertainment is provided by the audio and video programs. The advanced European ETCS Level 2 signaling system as well as the proven LZB – both systems from Siemens – protect train operations.

High Speed Trainset Velaro RUS Sapsan for Russian Railways RZD

In May 2006, the contract was signed between the Russian railway company OAO “Rossijskije zheleznyje dorogi” (RZD) and Siemens for the development and construction of high speed trains. The project encompasses the supply of 8 trainsets equipped with components and systems whose performance characteristics have been adapted to the climatic requirements as well as to the standards of the Russian Federation. These trains make use of a distributed traction system and were being supplied in two different versions:

namely, as single-system (3 kV DC) and dual-system (3 kV DC and 25 kV AC) trains. In December 2011 the Russian rail operator RZD has placed an order for another eight “Velaro RUS” high-speed trains plus a maintenance contract extending over 30 years. The trains will be built at the Siemens Krefeld plant and delivery is due to commence in January 2014

High Speed Trainset Velaro CN - China for Chinese Ministry of Railways MOR - China

In November 2005, Siemens and the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR) signed a contract for the delivery of 60 CRH3 high-speed trains. These trains can reach speeds of 300 km/h and are now in operation on the Beijing–Tianjin and Wuhan-Guangzhou lines. By August 2013, the trains had clocked up over 145 million km. The first three Velaro CNs were produced at the Siemens plant in Krefeld, with the rest of the trainsets being built under Siemens license by our Chinese partner Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd. (TRC) on site in China. In 2009, Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd. (TRC) placed a supplementary order for the delivery of traction and train control components for a further 20 CRH3 trains.

These trains can reach speeds of up to 350 km/h and have been in operation on the Beijing–Shanghai line since the beginning of 2011. Up to May 2013, the fleet had clocked up a total of 81 million km.

In the same year, Siemens received an order from CRC for the delivery of traction and train control components for 30 8-car trains with a top speed of 350 km/h (CRH380B), and one year later CRC ordered material for another 30 8-car units (CRH380B LTT) designed to run at temperatures as low as minus 40°C. These "low-temperature trains" have been running on lines in northern China between the cities of Dalian and Harbin since the beginning of 2012 and, by May 2013, the fleet had clocked up almost 15 million km.

High-Speed Trainset Velaro D - Class BR 407 - for Deutsche Bahn AG - Germany

"In December 2008, Deutsche Bahn awarded Siemens
 a contract for 15 interoperable eight-car high-speed
trains. The Velaro train for Germany (Class 407) is based on the
Velaro platform, which is one of the fastest operational
high-speed trains in the world.

The scope of delivery was increased to a total of 16 trains with a further release order for one more train in May 2011. Being multiple-system trains, they can run in Belgium, Germany and France - for example on the new line LGV Rhin-Rhône. The Velaro D can be coupled with the ICE 3, thereby opening up more flexibility for deployment in German services."

Eurostar e320 - Class 374 - Eurostar International Limited

In December 2010, Eurostar International Ltd. placed an order with Siemens PLC for ten 16-car high-speed trains. The trains are based on the Velaro platform and, from 2015, they will join the existing Eurostar fleet in services through the Eurotunnel between Great Britain and continental Europe on the Paris-London and Amsterdam-Brussels-London lines. With its 16,000 kW of traction power, the 400 m long trainset reaches a top speed of 320 km/h. The highly flexible interior and the seating capacity ensure a high standard for around 900 passengers. The new trainsets are also equipped with innovative communication and entertainment systems which, in future, will give passengers the opportunity of enjoying onboard Internet and video on demand.

The contract with Eurostar also includes the refurbishment of the Temple Mills depot in London to handle maintenance of the new vehicles. It also includes a 10-year contract covering support for maintenance and the supply of spare parts.

Velaro TR - TCDD

The Turkish state-run railway company, TCDD, has placed two orders with Siemens for one and for six 8-car high-speed trains. The Velaro train for Turkey is based on the Velaro platform, one of the fastest high-speed trains in service in the world today.

With tractive power of 8,000 kW, the 200 m long Velaro TR reaches a top operating speed of 300 km/h. The flexibility of the interior and the large seating capacity allow alternative interiors that enable 516 passengers to travel in extreme comfort. The new trainsets are also equipped with innovative communication and entertainment systems.

The newest member of the Velaro family represents the continuation of a great success story: Turkey, in the shape of the national railway company TCDD, is the latest country to place its faith in Siemens technology, following on from Spain, China, Russia, Germany and England.

Besides the supply of fully operational trains, the contract with TCDD also includes a seven-year contract for maintenance including spare parts, cleaning service and the supply of a driving simulator.
