Cargo automation

Cost-effective, operationally safe, and flexible freight train marshaling. With Siemens Mobility, you not only gain a world-class solution – you also stand to benefit from our extensive expertise in planning and implementation over all project stages. No matter how complex or specific your needs are.

Automate your marshalling yards - for more efficiency and safety in freight transport

Cost-effective marshaling largely depends on two factors: Firstly, the rationalization of operational sequences at all levels – from train arrival to train departure. Secondly, the maximum possible automation of all work cycles and humping operations. To this end, Siemens Mobility has developed the Trackguard Cargo MSR32 modular automation system for marshaling yards. MSR32 has already been successfully implemented in high-performance marshaling yards throughout the world.

The main advantages for you

  • Control system for all shunting techniques and procedures
  • Reduction of shunting times and transfer costs
  • High marshaling quality, reduction of shunting damage
  • Installation and commissioning possible without interrupting operations
  • Adaptable to local climate and weather conditions
  • High-performance reference yards all over Europe and other countries
  • Integration into modern transportation chains (cargo management system)
  • Interfaces to adjacent interlockings
  • Low maintanance

The main functions

Fast, safe cut routing control

Efficient cut routing control, i.e. fully automatic route setting for all cuts from the hump to the classification tracks, must be both fast and safe. Forming the basis for this: knowledge of the current locations and movements of all cars in the classification zone.

Optimized speed control

Speed control ensures the optimally timed retarding of humped cars without damaging freight. Hydraulic clasp retarders of the Trackguard Retarder type are generally used for retarding. Depending on the yard size and automation level, one to three retarder groups (upper main retarders, lower main retarders and classification track retarders) are installed.

Improved humping performance

In contrast to a manually controlled system: humping performance can be increased by at least 20% with remote control of the humping locomotive for the hump approach and humping operation. At the start of the humping operation, the maximum permissible humping speed is calculated for each cut. This process takes account of track parameters, routes, and cut properties.

Easy fault location

The Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system’s comprehensive logging functions ensure that maintenance staff can retrace all events, evaluate them, and respond early to irregularities. All operator actions, responses to operator actions, and indications of irregularities as well as all events on a process control level, such as process inputs and outputs, are recorded.

User interface with live overview

MSR32 comes with an ABAS graphical user interface similar to that of any standard Windows application. Most operators are quick to make the most of the live overview and comprehensive reporting features.

High-tech propulsion equipment

In high-capacity yards, clearance equipment is responsible for the immediate removal of long cuts from the last set of classification points and the danger zone behind the classification track retarders. Closing-up propulsion equipment pushes cars into the exact position for coupling on the classification track.

Different solutions tailored to your needs

Trackguard Cargo MSR32 TB kompakt and Trackguard RaStw are yard operation controllers related to the original Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system. They have been devised to control small- to medium-scale marshaling operations.

Trackguard Cargo MSR32 TB

Trackguard Cargo MSR32 TB kompakt is a high-performance retarder controller for the automation of lower main retarders. It can be integrated into a MSR32 hump control system (cut routing control) – meaning that it is fully scalable in case marshaling volumes increase.

Trackguard Cargo MSR32 RaStw

Trackguard Cargo MSR32 RaStw enables optimized shunting operations with high efficiency. This type of shunting interlocking is used in shunting areas without hump yards: ancillary areas in stations, entry and exit areas in hump yards, stabling facilities for unoccupied passenger trains or track systems within depots and factories. Trackguard Cargo MSR32 RaStw can be combined with the Yard Management System, the Switchguard DPC and MSR32 sequence control for complex systems. Coupling options exist to systems for dispatching, controlling and monitoring statuses (gates, systems on the track) and to adjacent interlocking systems for cross-interface operation.
