MoComp Traction Converters

Siemens Mobility innovations has set the standard in traction converters for many years. As a pioneer in the introduction and continual development of three phase AC technology for traction applications, Siemens Mobility has helped significantly increase the power density of converters. We fundamentally use the latest technologies in order further enhance to our customers’ competitiveness, not only with innovation for power components, but also for controls. This has how we’ve always been able to optimally meet the requirements for drive technologies.
Modular platform solutions
Individually configured Siemens traction converters are based on highly developed platform solutions, supplied as either phase modules or as a complete converter unit.
All major voltage systems, either DC 750 V, 1,500 V and 3,000 V or the AC applications will be covered by two level inverters, equipped with IGBT's which are qualified for the rough conditions in traction applications.
All kinds of cooling are supported, for example water, external air and natural cooling.
Comfort and economy
Highly advanced Sitrac drive control technology enables minimal noise and vibration, drive speed control without a sensor and recuperative braking right up until stoppage. Furthermore, highly reliable converters with IGBTs suitable for drives achieve low operational costs and a high efficiency rate.
High-tech and advanced methods
Traction converters from Siemens Mobility always provide the highest possible benefit – they are fitted with the latest tools to give our customers the assurance that these products are perfectly suited for the task at hand. By using the latest semiconductors, we ensure that our customers’ traction converters are well able to deal with high volumes and mass, and are equipped to deal with future challenges.
Silicon carbide (SiC) in action
When it comes to the future of power electronics, all (technology) roads lead to new materials such as silicon carbide (SiC). The intrinsic properties of this material allow the efficiency of our traction converters to be significantly increased – therefore greatly reducing the amount of heat generated in power semiconductor components. This reduced temperature rise can be leveraged to optimize the envelope dimensions, converter cooling and overall drive system losses.
SIBAS – the optimal control for all types of trains
The modular control system SIBAS® (Siemens Bahn Automatisierungs System) can be easily integrated to every kind of train and easily added on to. It is designed to control everything from the electrical drive systems to the entire train.Successful worldwide
SIBAS 32C was introduced in 2010 and has been fitted to 3,000 trains all over the world. It is used for the vehicle control units (VCU), as well as traction control units (TCU), brakes control units (BCU) and auxiliary power supplies (APS).
Powerful microprocessors compute both high volume realtime calculations, as well as processing the entire data provided by all of the train’s functions, including the coordination of subsystems. The control units are responsible for providing open-loop and closed-loop control, protecting onboard traction equipment near the converters and performing control and information tasks on a higher level for the entire train. Our integrated basic systems for traction and control meet all our customers’ requirements for utmost reliability and lowest life cycle costs.
