Tolling Solutions
Siemens Mobility - a technology leader in tolling and corresponding enforcement solutions worldwide
Increasing demand in road traffic, limitations in infrastructure investments and rising environmental awareness challenges local authorities around the world. An efficient demand management is an important building block of future mobility management. Both, operators and road users, benefit from reduced congestion, improved air quality, and a new quality of urban life. The leading technologies of Siemens Mobility for free-flow open road and city tolling meet the individual needs of authorities worldwide.
Solutions for city, regional and national charging schemes:
- Satellite-based (GNSS) solutions
- Video-based (ANPR) charging and enforcement
- Smartphone-based toll charging
- EETS On-Board-Unit (OBU) for the flexible operation across EETS-compatible systems
Tolling on a City Scheme: Congestion Charging
In order to relieve the city roads from car traffic and shift mobility to more sustainable transport modes, motorized vehicles are charged when entering the city border.
- Congestion tariff can be adjusted depending on the vehicle's size, type and emissions
- Toll fee is collected through smart app- and video-based technologies, in full compliance with data-privacy requirements
- Congestion charging schemes provides city with most efficient lever to encourage the modal shift and manage overall road traffic demand
- Advanced solutions implement dynamic fees to account for critical situations (e.g. anticipated exceeding of an air pollution limit) or smoothen peak demands
National tolling schemes: Open Road Tolling
The open road tolling for a national road network is often based on a GNSS-system, enabling a highly accurate charging scheme according to the actual distance travelled.
- With flexible On-Board-Units (OBU) using multiple satellite positioning systems (Galileo, GPS, Glonass, Baidu), tolled road network can be easily extended
- Smart over-the-air management system keeps OBUs always up-to-date
- Alternatively or complimentary, smartphones can be used to fulfill OBU-Tasks
A tolling or congestion charging solution is the most efficient way to control over road network usage on the demand side.
Tolling of High-Occupancy-Vehicles: Fast Lane
In many scenarios, vehicles are only occupied by one person, the driver. Car pooling by combining the same trips by two or more persons can tremendously relieve the road traffic, and should be rewarded by the tolling scheme.
- With High-Occupancy-Tolling (HOT) for special lanes drivers have option to choose a separate fast-lane which is charged depending on the vehicle occupancy rate, or stay on lane without paying but with higher traffic volume
- Intelligent algorithm calculates toll fee for fast-lane dynamically depending on vehicle occupancy and traffic density while ensuring a minimum driving speed
- Number of passengers per vehicle is recorded and toll fee is fixed accordingly: the higher occupancy rate, the lower toll fee.
- Number plate per car is detected via ANPR camera and associated with corresponding occupancy rate
Experience shows that the savings in travel time create a high level of acceptance among the drivers.
Infrastructure and urban traffic control
Growing traffic volumes, increasing air pollution, rising costs: A mobility solution cannot solve all your infrastructure challenges on its own. But it will always contribute to making your city or municipality even more modern, more attractive and more environmentally friendly.Your contact
