Siemens Mobility Norway delivers modern signaling technology for a new Metro station in Oslo
Siemens Mobility Norway has secured a significant contract to provide a signaling and train control system for the new Diakonhjemmet Station on the Oslo Metro network. The contract, signed with Sporveien on July 4, 2025, is part of a comprehensive urban development initiative aimed at creating a modern and universally accessible public transport hub. The commissioning is scheduled for late December 2027.
A key project for urban development
The new Diakonhjemmet station will be located between the current Steinerud and Frøen stations on the Holmenkollbanen line. It will feature side platforms and a pedestrian bridge over the tracks, connecting Slemdalsveien with the planned Diakonhjemmet Square. The new station will replace the existing Frøen and Steinerud stations and will serve as a central transport hub in a newly developing, vibrant urban area.
Plans for the area include a new high school and nursing home, 200 new housing units and a new kindergarten. The university college campus will be expanded, and various amenities, such as cafés and cafeterias, will emerge around the new square.
The Norwegian Diakonhjemmet is behind the area’s development, while Sporveien is developing the new station.
This project highlights our dedication to creating innovative and inclusive transport solutions that enhance mobility and promote sustainable urban development.
A modern and flexible interlocking system for urban rail operations
The planned signaling and train control system will enable the construction of new platforms at Diakonhjemmet station, as well as the associated track realignment. As part of the contract, Siemens Mobility will deliver a new interlocking system, to be installed in a new technical room in the basement of a building adjacent to the eastbound platform at Diakonhjemmet Station. The operations center in Tøyen will be updated accordingly.
The new interlocking system will provide essential functions for connection to the new CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) operations at the neighboring Majorstua station, which are planned for August 2027. Diakonhjemmet Station will serve as a transition station for the CBTC interface.
Strategic importance for Oslo's infrastructure
The installation of the modern signaling system at the new Diakonhjemmet station is a significant step in the modernization of the Oslo T-Banen network. By combining technological innovation with future oriented infrastructure planning, the project lays the groundwork for the continued development of the CBTC system within Oslo's public transport network. Technical integration with existing systems and preparation for future requirements highlight the strategic importance of this contract. Scheduled for commissioning in late 2027, the new station will substantially improve transport infrastructure in the growing Diakonhjemmet area.
