Siemens Mobility has a significant UK footprint and continues to invest in local economies employing over 5,000 people across more than 30 sites, including manufacturing facilities at Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire, Chippenham in Wiltshire, and Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire. These sites are where our teams work tirelessly behind the scenes to transform rail travel and transport, supporting the movement of goods by freight across the country as well as millions of people’s every day journeys.
Testing a puzzle of programming languages in Ashby
At most Elizabeth line train stations, the CCTV, public address and passenger information screens are managed by our Digital Station Manager. This software is developed in Ashby by people like Amar working to transform rail travel for everyone.
Coding signalling and control infastructure in Chippenham
Our signalling systems are coded in Chippenham by degree apprentices like Katie. Our Chippenham factory is the UK’s only remaining dedicated signalling and control facility. The factory supports around 900 local manufacturing, research, engineering, and support staff. As well as serving the UK, this factory exports around 50% of all equipment produced.
Our systems improve reliability, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure a more punctual service for customers. Our modular signalling systems are transforming rail travel and transport in North Wales and will be crucial for the upcoming Northumberland line opening in 2024. And our digital signalling technology is being rolled out on the East Coast Main Line, allowing drivers to ‘see’ much further ahead than with trackside signals.
Building the next generation of trains in Goole
Our next generation of Piccadilly line trains are built in Goole, by the next generation of engineers like Milly. Thanks to our innovative design, the new Piccadilly line trains will offer passengers a more energy efficient, quieter and smoother journey.

By building collaborative partnerships we’re able to come up with the very best solutions for our customers and those who use the railway.
One of our suppliers is Sweetnam and Bradley, who are conveniently located near our Chippenham factory. They produce high-quality metal parts for our trackside technology, protecting our safety-critical systems from any weather condition. Future-proofing the country's rail network
We’re investing in our people and the skills of the future. Through a collaboration with the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR), the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, and the Department for Transport, we created our National Academy for Rail (NTAR). Since opening its doors in 2015, NTAR has upskilled, cross-skilled and educated more than 21,000 people. It's safeguarding a talent pipeline of engineers, systems designeers, and technicians to ensure sustainable and reliable tarnsport solutions for the next 160 years and more.
