Level Crossing in a Box: Overview

Level crossings are comprised of signs, lights, signalling equipment and other safety measures such as barriers and gates. In most cases slow technology such as relays help run the interlocking, but Eletromechanical relays have moving parts that wear and performance suffers. In addition, there is an increase in cable installation between the Signalling Equipment Room (SER) and level crossings which leads to an increase in cost as a large portion of testing takes place on site. The more activity that takes place on site, the longer the railway is closed, and the passenger is disrupted.

Siemens Mobility has introduced the Level Crossing in a Box (LCIAB) solution that provides a replacement to a traditional level crossing controller providing, modern level crossing control, diagnostics, increased reliability, low power consumption and remote condition monitoring.

Using tried and tested Trackguard WNC (Westrace Network Communication) over ethernet  connectivity Siemens Mobility has increased a significant amount of testing off site by prefabricating and testing to the clients' bespoke requirements in a controlled environment off site. The pressures of commissioning times and the mistakes that develop from this are softened as the estimated shift in ratio of off-site to on-site testing from 30:70 to 40:60. The standardisation approach provides cost savings in design, civils, installation and testing.

Siemens Mobility Level Crossing in a Box – Digital Level Crossing Safety for Rail and Road Users

By taking proven Westrace technology that has been applied on worldwide projects and creating new application techniques, Siemens Mobility is reducing the cost of modernising level crossings while still delivering SIL 4 safety. The use of LCIAB eliminates the use of tradition relays resulting in cost reductions in both installation, commissioning, ongoing maintenance and is the gateway to increasing digitisation on the railway.
 

The LCIAB equipment can be packaged in a standalone, plug coupled, MEH.  The standardisation allows for rapid installation which will have the system up and running in as little as 44 hours after delivery to site. MEH footprints offer approximately 40% saving over a traditional level crossing REB which houses many conventional relays so when space is critical, the LCIAB can be integrated adjacent to existing equipment. Not only does the LCIAB alleviated time constraints within a project, but issues with space limitations are also mitigated.

  • Compatible with current UK level crossing barriers
    By being compatible with current UK barrier machines, it allows for scheme designers to easily implement the LCIAB solution into projects. Projects run on a tight schedule and it is just as important to adhere to timing in the early stages, such as designing so that the rest of the project follows suite
  • ETCS ready
    The LCIAB has taken future proofing into account by ensuring it is ETCS ready. This prolongs the lifetime of the solution significantly.
  • Off-site testable
    Completing the majority of testing in a controlled, off-site environment will be beneficial to the passenger and also ensure the project runs as efficiently as possible. The reduced ratio of on-site testing should shorten the duration of the closure to the network and affecting passenger’s journeys less.
  • Reduced installation time & Minimal modification to existing track
    The LCIAB reduces amount of cables to be installed compared to a relay based solution. This saves a substantial amount of money as there is less excavation of the rail and less labour & machinery required. Installing cable is a lengthy process and decreasing this requirement is welcome within any project.
